a dark twist to the fairytales we all know and love | line fashion show 2024

tales of a time

the theme

we chose fairytales as the theme for the 2024 fashion show, as the timelessness of the narratives resonate across cultures and generations.

but we didn’t want our designers to play into the stereotype of happily-ever-after disney fairytales.

taking inspiration from grimms' fairy tales, we stripped the fairytales back to their roots, exploring what lay behind the romanticised stories.

the event

for line’s 10th anniversary, I was lucky enough to co-head the Fashion Show, organising, recruiting for, and creatively directing the concept, music, theme, choreography, performance and promotion alongside my co-head and wider team. The event welcomed 400+ guests and secured sponsorship from Red Bull.

For the piece gluttony, I looked at overindulgence as a result of mental restriction. This is most evidently symbolized by the nature of the top, which is a corset. By featuring woven ribbons as a common motif throughout the garment, I show how one might try to impose limits on how much they consume, only for it to backfire. The fabric used here is also semi-translucent, showing how one might still feel numb or mentally unsatiated despite consuming large amounts of food.

The most crucial thing in creating the dieting outfit was to avoid furthering the archetype that those who suffer from a dieting mindset are skinny, white, and female. Thus I tried making an androgynous piece and focused more on the mentality of dieting rather than the lean physique that the media commonly portrays.

The piece is very skin-tight, symbolizing how sufferers are often detached from their bodies, seeing their bodies as something in need of work rather than being a part of themselves. On the upper half, I added a detachable baggy sleeve that wraps around the waist on one half of the garment. This reflects how being body dysmorphic might cause one might perceive themselves as bigger than they really are. On the bottom of the pants, I’ve added stone gems to the pants, commenting on how the values of diet culture have become entrenched in so many people’s minds– weighing down on their confidence and self-worth.

This outfit explores the concept of plastic surgery as a means of aesthetic self-expression and boosting one’s confidence. While some may view it as a form of self-rejection, advanced and affordable procedures have made it accessible for people to manipulate their features to look like an alien, an animal, or follow current trends. To convey the idea of body manipulation, the garment is made out of bent plastic sheets, creating dynamic curves.
